LINCOLN MEMORIAL

The Lincoln Statue in the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. is comprised of 28 carved marble blocks assemble to create the sculpture. The stones move with seasonal expansion and contraction. Settling has also created some dramatic gaps in the joints between the stones. The old mortar in those joints needed to be removed and replaced in such a way that continued the lines of the sculpture making the joints invisible.

Examples of open joints and and finished restoration.

In some cases the Lincoln stones have shifted so much a hand could fit in the gap.
